Roxbury Latin School is established.

August 31, 1645

Originally the Roxburie Free Schoole, it is founded by Thomas Dudley and Rev. John Eliot and located initially in rented rooms near today’s 2345 Washington Street. The oldest public school in continuous existence in North America (Boston Latin School suspends classes during the Siege of Boston), its first headmaster is Philip Eliot. Admission is initially free only for the sons of donors, then free to boys from Roxbury until 1934. Graduates include James Bryant Conant, Joseph Warren, Paul Dudley White and Walter Muir Whitehill. The school moves to new buildings in (first) 1652,* (second) 1742,* and (third) 1789,* to Kearsage Avenue (fourth) in 1860 (1836-Heath), and to its current campus (fifth) on St. Theresa Avenue in 1927.*
